A palette is not a set of random colours: it is a relation. This tool starts from a random hue and applies a scheme — analogous, complementary, triadic, monochrome — rotating the hue by fixed angles in HSL space. The difference between a palette that works and one that clashes is almost always geometric.
Every colour is checked against black and white with the WCAG relative luminance formula. A ratio of 4.5:1 is the AA threshold for normal text, 7:1 is AAA. Contrast is a measurement, not an opinion: if the number is low, that colour cannot carry text.
How it works
- 01Choose the harmonic scheme: analogous, complementary, triadic, monochrome.
- 02Generate a new base hue or lock the colours you like.
- 03Copy hex values in one click, with the contrast ratio next to each one.
Frequently asked
Color palette generator
What is the difference between schemes?
Analogous rotates hue by ±30°, complementary by 180°, triadic by 120°. Monochrome changes only lightness and saturation. These are colour-wheel rules, not taste.
Is the contrast actually computed?
Yes, with the WCAG 2.1 formula: (L1+0.05)/(L2+0.05) over linearized sRGB relative luminance. The numbers shown are those values, not estimates.
Can I use the palette commercially?
Yes. Colours are not copyrightable: they are wavelengths. The generating code is yours, the palette is a geometric fact.
